If you’re new to the world of hybrid technology, you might be confused regarding the difference between a hybrid model and a Plug-in Hybrid such as the 2021 BMW X3 PHEV models for sale at our Fort Myers dealership. While it isn’t the only PHEV in our new BMW inventory, we’ll use this model as an example to show you why a plug-in hybrid BMW model is a great choice for your travels.

A Blend of Power Sources

As you likely already know, the hybrid drive system in the 2021 BMW X3 PHEV features both a 2.0-liter turbocharged combustion engine and an electric motor. This integrated system produces a combined 288 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, but that doesn’t quite tell the whole story. The combustion engine alone makes 288 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the electric motor offers 107 horsepower and 77 pound-feet of torque. The reason the horsepower doesn’t change is that the electric motor is integrated, meaning that it doesn’t augment the power offered by the combustion engine. What it does do, however, is increase the amount of leverage applied to the wheels, which is why torque improves to 310 pound-feet when both motors are used together. Better yet, you can cut out the combustion engine altogether and use the electric motor on its own for up to 17 miles, but keep in mind you’ll have just 107 horsepower at your disposal in this scenario.

Benefits

Other than improving overall range to 340 miles per tank, the electric motor also offers instant torque that the combustion engine can’t manage. Because the electric motor doesn’t have any compression, sparking, or fuel burn to worry about, it can deliver all of its power at any speed. This helps with acceleration, carrying the BMW X3 PHEV to 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.9 seconds, putting it ahead of several modern sports cars. Not bad for a five-passenger luxury SUV.
