BMW's new 5 Series midsize saloon is an impressive road machine that is a bit better in every way than the last generation, including better styling, technology and performance, according to Roadshow auto writer Alex Goy. In short, the 2017 BMW 540i that was tested feels like a smaller version of the opulent 7 Series, and a roomier version of the 3 Series sports sedan.

The 540i has a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that makes 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, and gets from 0-62 mph in 5.1 seconds. The xDrive all-wheel drive version will do 0-62…
