One of the most important things that you can do is to map out your route accordingly and make sure you know what is up ahead. It is also a good idea to have an alternate route planned just in case any unforeseen obstacles come into your way. Try to travel when the roads are not at their peak levels. Giving yourself an extra day (or even an extra few hours) can dramatically decrease your sense of urgency and make for a much more enjoyable trip.
One last thing – Make sure your vehicle is road-worthy before you leave!
